Dr Cheong was the Director of the Digestive Diseases Centre and former Head of Colorectal Surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He did his fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic, Florida, USA in 1992.

He is renowned for his colonoscopy skills and is a pioneer of laporoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer in Singapore. He is expert in the management of complex pelvic tumors and recurrent cancer, having served as a visiting consultant with National Cancer Centre, Johns Hopkins Singapore and KK Women's and Children's Hospital.
